Dão

The Dão region of Portugal is one of the oldest and most prestigious. Situated in the Dão Demarcated Region, with the Dão-Lafões sub-region, it is known as the Portuguese Burgundy.

Climate and Geography
The Dão region is located mainly on a plateau, protected on three sides by the granite mountain ranges of Serra da Estrela, Serra do Caramulo and Serra da Nave. This helps maintain a temperate climate, away from the effects of the Atlantic Ocean. The region has rainy winters and hot, dry summers before harvest. The vineyards grow on sandy, well-drained soils on granite rocks.

Viticulture and Wines
The Dão region is home to several dozen indigenous grape varieties. Most of the wine production is made from the Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Jaen, Alfrocheiro Preto and Encruzado grapes. Around 80% of the production is red wine, with regulations requiring at least 20% Touriga Nacional.
