Mira Aires
The cave wine is produced by Casa Ermelinda Freitas, made from Portuguese grape varieties Castelão, Touriga Nacional, and Aragonês, and French Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. There are two stages of aging: the first, 12 months in French and American oak barrels, and the second, 5 years in the cave after bottling, in the gallery that hosts the "5 Senses Tour." The gallery is about 80 meters deep, maintaining a stable temperature between 16 and 18°C and a constant humidity level of 90%. It has an alcohol volume of 14.5%.
The underground adventure will engage your 5 senses during the visit to the Mira Aire Caves and a secondary gallery. The tour covers around 600 meters of cave and descends 683 steps, with the largest stairway having 105 continuous steps. Following the tour, there will be a tasting session that includes a bottle of Cave Wine with cornbread, regular bread, olives, regional cheeses, ham, and chorizo.
No prior experience is required; the route is not physically demanding, and no ropes or harnesses are needed. An audio-guide application is available to complement the information provided by the guides. This app is free and can be downloaded to most smartphones, offering explanations in Portuguese, sign language, Spanish, French, English, and German.
